System Operation
MTI's Accumeasure System 1500 is a noncontact system that measures distance, displacement, or motion by converting the electrical capacitance between a probe and a target into voltage output. Using a patented approach, a linear output is generated that quickly corresponds precisely to the probe-to-taget distance.
The system measures the capacitance between a grounded target and a sensing electrode via a coaxial cable. A guard circuit connected to the cable shield prevents the cable capacitance from interfering with the sensing electrode. A guard ring at the probe face forms a linear field for the active inner electrode.
A constant current is applied across the gap between the sensor face and the target. The target forms a ground path for the current to return to the Accumeasure amplifier.
