About Headsets

Headsets are attachments for holding an earphone and transmitter to a user's head. Headsets are also known as earphones and stereophones. Headsets are widely used for voice communication to communicate with people located at diffent places using comnference phones or standard phones. Headsets can also be used to listen to music or other kinds of recordings. Headsets help in preventing other people from hearing the sound either for privacy or to prevent disturbance which is produced by a normal speaker. A headset is a pair of transducers that receive electrical signal from a receiver and use speakers to convert the signal into audible sound waves. There are many different types of headsets. Examples include circumaural, supra-aural, earphone/ear bud, IEMs/canalphones. Circumaural headsets have pads that go around the ears, usually very large and very comfortable. This is the type typically used in recording studios. Supra-aural headsets have pads that go on top of the ears. Headsets were commonly bundled with personal stereos. Ear buds or earphones are small headsets that are placed directly outside of the ear canal, but without fully enveloping it. Headsets are generally inexpensive and are favored for their portability and convenience. Canalphones are ear buds that sit directly inside the ear canal. Headsets offer extreme portability, sound isolation, and (in many cases) amazing sound. Headsets have been further categorized into phone headsets, wireless headsets, computer microphone headsets, and cordless headsets. Other headsets are commonly available.

There are several ways in which headsets function. Headsets are available with dynamic driver types and electrostatic driver types. A dynamic driver principle consists of a magnetic element attached to a thin diaphragm which is actuated by a voice call oscillating it and inducing vibrations into the air producing sound. The examples for dynamic type are AKG-K501 and KOSS TD60. An AKG-K501 is a circumaural headset with a frequency response of 16-30,000 Hz having impedance of 120 ? and SPL 94.0 db. The KOSS TD60 is a circumaural headset with a frequency response of 45-12,000 Hz having impedance of 32 ? and SPL 95.0 db. In the electrostatic driver types, a thin electrostatically charged diaphragm is suspended between two perforated metal plates. An electrical sound signal is applied to electrodes creating an electrical field. Depending on the polarity of this field, the membrane is drawn towards one of the plates. Air is forced through the perforations; combined with a continuously changing electrical signal oscillating the membrane, a sound wave is generated. An example of an electrostatic type headset is a STAX SR-007 Omega II. This is of circumaural type having a frequency response of 6-41,000 Hz with an impendence of 170000.0 ? and SPL 100.0 db. Headsets are designed and manufactured to meet most industry specification.
