Voice Loggers and Audio Recorders

Voice loggers and audio recorders are used to locate, retrieve, duplicate and/or distribute audio voice or data information from single system environments to large multi-channel networked systems. Voice loggers and audio recorders are used in call centers, public safety dispatching, technical support centers, and aircraft cockpit voice recording systems. Voice loggers and audio recorders are also used to record client or customer conversations for quality control and workplace performance optimization. Typically, these systems use digital audio recorder technology to compress the signal for large storage capacity, quick retrieval and playback of stored data, and maintenance of records.

Voice loggers and audio recorders may be voice-activated, work in a continuous recording mode, or be operated manually. Voice loggers are often used to provide sample calls for training new employees. There are some legal issues that must be addressed before implementation. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recommends that businesses using an audio recorder notify customers by using a beep tone at particular intervals.

Voice loggers and audio recorders can be provided as multichannel systems, typically offering from four up to 32 channels for managing incoming calls or conversations. Multichannel logging can provide connections to phone lines, two-way radios, broadcast audio, and microphones. Voice loggers and audio recorders can also come with computer-based applications for storing digital audio signals. A streaming audio recorder uses a personal computer’s (PC) built-in microphone or an external device to record and play streaming audio in mp3 or Windows Media (wma) format.

Voice loggers and audio recorders are vital tools in emergency response or recreating the scene of an accident. The U.S. Transportation Safety Board uses robust voice loggers, known as black boxes, to monitor crew conversations in commercial aircraft. In the case of a crash or other onboard emergency, the voice cockpit recorder can provide essential information to understand what went on right before the accident. The voice cockpit recording may also offer the only clues in the event of a catastrophic crash that kills the crew and passengers.
