About Variable Resistance Linear Position Sensors and Switches

Variable reluctance linear position sensors and switches are non-contact devices. Variable reluctance sensing incorporates a "spring" of elastic, highly magnetically permeable material surrounded by two coils. Variable reluctance linear position sensors and switches use strain-based technology, wherein a magnetic circuit is formed, and the parameter input causes mechanical deflection of the spring member as a function of pressure, force, or acceleration. The deformation, strain, or displacement of the spring results in modulation of the inductance of the two coils, and this is read to indicate force, pressure, position, or other input to the sensor.

The most important specification for variable reluctance linear position sensors and switches is the operating distance to be measured. When thinking of this, care must be taken to include in the calculation the distance the target will be from the sensor, not just the displacement of the target. Also important are accuracy measured as a percentage of full scale, repeatability and minimum target diameter. Obviously, larger targets are easier to sense, but some variable reluctance position sensors and switches can detect targets that are quite small.

Products & Services Related to Variable Resistance Linear Position Sensors and Switches

Cable Extension Linear Position Sensors
Cable extension linear position sensors are used to measure the movement and displacement of objects. A cable or wire is attached to an object, and as the object moves, the transducer produces an electrical signal proportional to the wire's linear extension.
Capacitive Linear Position Sensors
Capacitive linear position sensors are devices that sense position / displacement using capacitance technology.
Eddy Current Linear Position Sensors
Eddy current linear position sensors detect the distance from a target by using magnetic fields generated by a reference and sensing coils.
Fiber Optic Linear Position Sensors
Fiber optic linear position sensors use fiber optic technology to sense position and displacement.
LVDT Linear Position Sensors
Linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) linear position sensors have a series of inductors in a hollow cylindrical shaft and a solid cylindrical core. These devices produce an electrical output proportional to the position of the core
Optical Triangulation Position Sensors
Optical triangulation position sensors use reflected waves to pinpoint position and displacement. The source of these waves may be a light emitting diode (LED), infrared (IR) light, or laser.
Ultrasonic Linear Position Sensors and Switches
Ultrasonic linear position sensors and switches use ultrasonic waves in combination with light and frequency readings for position and displacement sensing.
