Operating Range:
Operating Range may be limited by the focus of the light collection optics as well as the maximum distance at which light is reflected to the sensor. The operating range at which a sensor can pick up reflective light and obtain an accurate distance measurement.

Point sensor
A small spot is used for high-resolution measurement.
| |
Line sensor
A straight-line array of beams is used for measurement.

Electrical Output
Many instruments allow for the status and readings of the instruments to be monitored from a PC or other remote location. In addition to monitoring, interfaces can also allow the initiation of test cycles and configuration changes of the unit via varying interface options.
| |
Your choices are...
| |
Analog Current
Often called a transmitter. A current is imposed on the output circuit proportional to the measurement. Feedback is used to provide the appropriate current regardless of line noise, impedance, etc. Useful when sending signals long distances.
| |
Analog Voltage
Output voltage is a simple (usually linear) function of the measurement.
| |
Analog Frequency or Modulated Frequency
The output signal is encoded via amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), or some other modulation scheme, but the signal is still analog in nature.
| |
Other Digital
Any digital output other than the standard serial or parallel signals. Simple TTL logic signals are an example.
| |
Parallel
A standard digital output protocol (parallel) such as IEEE488, etc.
| |
Serial
A standard digital output protocol (serial) such as RS232, etc.
| |
Switched / Alarm
An "output" of a change in state of switches or alarms

| |
Laser
Uses a laser diode to create a point or line by projecting a beam of energy through a lens or off a rotating mirror or prism. It allows for a large depth of field.

Time-of-Flight technique:
| |
Your choices are...
| |
Continuous Wave
Time of flight sensors derive range from the time it takes light to travel from the sensor to the target and return. Some methods time a single round trip directly, and some use other techniques to calculate the range from many cycles of light.
| |
Pulsed
For very long range distance measurements (up to many miles) "time-of-flight" laser rangefinders using pulsed laser beams are used. The laser emits very brief, very intense pulses of light. The amount of time the pulse takes to reach the target and return is measured and converted to a distance measurement.
